September 27, 2007 - Residents and business owners worked together to cleanup and mulch planting beds at the Pavilion at Minnie Wood Memorial Square for the Fall Family Festival.
Here are just some of the highlights of the renovation:

In the spring and summer of 2006, area residents and the Chippewa-Broadway Business Association joined together with St. Louis Parks Department staff to launch the much needed renovation of this unique city park, located between Gasconade and Meramec and Broadway and Ohio Streets.

The Pavilion was repainted in a lovely yellow with ocre and blue accents and the terra cotta roof tiles repaired. The bathrooms were also repaired and updated with stainless steel fixtures. New exterior electric lights were added to brighten the facility and provide safety for park visitors. The old deteriorated steps and concrete plaza were removed. The new concrete plaza now has a beautiful surface and is ADA.

Just north of the Pavilion, a cooling fountain was built. Visitors to the park can enjoy the sight and sounds of water shooting into the air as children play in the spray. The drinking fountain has been replaced, as have the sidewalks on the west side of the building.

September 27, 2007 - Residents and business owners worked together to cleanup and mulch planting beds at the Pavilion at Minnie Wood Memorial Square, as part of preparations for the Fall Family Festival.

Residents spent many hours in April and May of 2006 digging, planting and mulching knockout roses, grasses, bayberry bushes, boxwoods and coneflowers. A new sign facing Broadway was also installed with the name Minnie Wood Memorial Square.

Plans to develop a playground were presented at several neighborhood meetings for residents to provide comments and suggestions. Aldermen Ken Ortmann and Alderman Craig Schmid began the process of finding capitol funds for the equipment. After numerous meetings, Ken Ortmann announced that funding for the playground had been approved.

In the next few months, the park will undergo dramatic changes as the colorful playground is installed as part of phase one. A soft surface will protect childen playing on the swings, slides and climbing features of the playground. The area will be divided into a section for young children and a section for older children. Future phases include decorative fencing, lighting of the ballfields and additional trees to replace those lost in recent storms.

It's just the beginning. The ongoing renovation of Minnie Wood Memorial Square has brought new life to the park with area residents working together and sharing a singular vision to improve the quality of life in their neighborhood.

Plans for the special celebration will be announced shortly. For further information, call Betty Moore, 314-771-0200 or Sarah Bliss, 314-772-3963.
